What are collateral consequences? Explain the secondary handicaps of conviction that continue to affect offenders even after they have served their sentences

What will be an ideal response?

Collateral consequences are disabilities that are imposed upon an offender as a result of being convicted, in addition to the punishment imposed by statute. These include a loss of some of the rights and privileges ordinarily available to citizens.

The secondary handicaps that continue to affect offenders after they have served their sentences include social stigma, the loss of civil rights, and administrative and legislative restrictions. Social stigma is the dishonor or shame that is associated with criminal status. Former offenders are faced with prejudice and distrust due to their status, making it difficult for them to successfully reintegrate into society and find employment. Offenders also lose a number of civil rights, even after being released from prison. These may include the loss of the right to vote, to hold public office, and to serve on a jury. Other legislative restrictions also may affect the offender after release. Certain occupational or professional licenses may be revoked or denied to convicted offenders, affecting an offender's employment opportunities. The federal firearms disability also affects offenders.
