Explain the purpose and function of expansion joints.

?Within masonry walls, movements can occur that produce stresses that may cause cracking. These stresses are created by expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature, changes in moisture content, and structural movements due to settling of the foundation, and concentration of stresses at openings in the wall. Control and expansion joints are used to relieve these stresses andmust be carefully determined as part of the wall design. Expansion Joints are intentionally created slots that close to accommodate expansion of masonry materials. Joints are made using bond breakers of asphalt felt or pre-formed rubber gaskets between units. Generally, they are located where there are changes in wall height or wall thickness and at openings; wall intersections; building corners; and at junctions between walls and columns.
