In this stage, the leader attempts to surface underlying differences that could cause conflict. The leader tries to do this by encouraging open and respectful dialogue, rather than argumentative discussion. With dialogue, members are asked to not only talk, but also most importantly to listen so that all voices can be heard, and so that preconceived judgements and attributions are not made. It is a lack of leadership in this stage that can allow negative judgements and attributions, creating distrust and dysfunction. It is the goal at this stage, to surface conflicts, disagreements, and issues, and resolve them constructively, so that the team can progress on to the other stages of development, and the successful accomplishment of its goals.
