What are some benefits of using RTI over the IQ-achievement discrepancy method as a way to identify and instruct children with learning difficulties?
What will be an ideal response?
RTI allows for early identification and prevention of learning difficulties. In the RTI model, students are screened as early as kindergarten for academic difficulties and provided with appropriate intervention. Students who respond to this early intervention are unlikely to need additional help or qualify for special education. Progress monitoring measures help teachers to identify students' needs and adjust instruction accordingly. In contrast, the IQ-achievement discrepancy method relies on IQ scores and achievement test scores for identification of learning disabilities. Children are not referred for IQ testing until the second grade or later. IQ assessments are expensive to administer and do not provide guidance on how to deliver instruction.
