Compare the trends seen in the characteristics of r-selected and K-selected species, also noting exceptions learned in your study of population ecology

What will be an ideal response?

K-selected organisms tend to be larger organisms with longer life spans, which protect their evolutionary/genetic investment by offering more care of offspring. Conversely, r-selected species tend to be smaller with shorter life spans, offering little or no care for offspring. K-selected species tend to reach equilibrium with carrying capacity and population size remains fairly steady. The r-selected species are more likely to fluctuate in numbers. Sea turtles are a notable exception of a larger, long-lived species (like most K-selected species) that offers no care to offspring (like most r-selected species). Considering the majority of plant species that produce large numbers of seeds and can hardly be imagined "caring" for offspring(r-selected characteristics), there are some, such as cacti, that live very long and may produce smaller numbers of seeds (characteristics of K-selected species).
