Dust in the southeastern United States is thought to come from Africa. How can this be, when the prevailing wind pattern at this latitude is westerly?
What will be an ideal response?
The southwestern Sahara is at a more southerly latitude than the southeastern United States, and is in a zone of prevailing easterly winds. These winds transport Sahara dust across the Atlantic Ocean and into the Caribbean Sea. Summer heating over the southeastern U.S. lowers surface air pressure, which produces a seasonal wind from the south that draws in the dusty air from the Caribbean.
