Maryland v. Craig (1990) held states can pass laws to protect child victims of sexual abuse from face to face confrontations during trial. Now children can give their testimony in another room and be seen in court via video. This has helped children who are victims of sexual abuse by reducing the trauma they experience in seeing the abuser in court. De Shaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services (1989) held the government could not be sued for failing to intervene on behalf of a victim. The justices argued the state does not have a special obligation to protect people from harming each other. In this case, social services were charged with failing to protect a child who was repeatedly beaten by his father and ultimately died.
