What is the association between watching sexual content on television and engaging in sexual activity?
What will be an ideal response?
In a study of more than 1,700 teenagers aged 12 to 17, watching sexual content was
related to initiation into sexual activity. Further, teenagers who ranked in the 90th
percentile for exposure to sexual content on TV were two to three times more likely to
report becoming pregnant or, as in the case of young men, reported being responsible
for a pregnancy. The results of these studies are correlational, not causal. Therefore, it
is not possible to determine whether watching sexual content increased teens sexual
activity, whether sexually active teens were more likely to choose to watch sexual
content on television, or whether there are other variables that can account for both
sexual activity and preference for viewing sexual content.
