Explain some of the motivations for arson.
What will be an ideal response?
Arson can have a variety of instrumental motivations such as financial gain, revenge, and intimidation, or expressive motivations that may signal psychopathology of some sort. For instance, an owner of a failing business may hire a professional arsonist (a torch) to burn down his or her place of business, a person may set fire to the property of another because of some perceived wrong suffered, or labor unionists may set fires during a labor dispute to intimidate management, as was the case with the massive Dupont Hotel fire in Puerto Rico in 1986 that led to the death of 97 people and injured 140 others.
