Compare VAKT (Fernald) with the Orton-Gillingham approach. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

What will be an ideal response?

• Comparison: Both programs are designed for severely disabled readers, are multisensory, and have a tracing component. However, in classic Orton-Gillingham, students say the names of the letters as they trace them. In Fernald, students say syllables as they trace them. Fernald is a supplementary technique. It uses a language experience approach and teaches words that students need to know. It needs to be complemented by a systematic phonics program. Orton-Gillingham is a highly-structure systematic program that introduces a full range of word recognition skills.
• Advantages & Disadvantage: Fernald's tracing is more thorough. Words are presented in the context of a selection being written by the student with the help of the teacher. This could build on students' interests, but the technique is time-consuming and does not systematically present a full range of skills.
Orton-Gillingham presents a full range of skills, but skills are presented in isolation. Program is also very highly structured. It has some selections for reinforcing skills but these are highly structured and lacking in appeal.
