Describe the structure of a nonlinear new story. Choose a topic that interests you, and explain how a nonlinear story about the subject might be organized.
What will be an ideal response?
Student examples will vary but should include the following main points: A nonlinear news story is structured like a web of information organized around a core story idea. Growing outward from the core story idea are the basic story elements, or themes, around which are clustered chunks of information arranged in miniature inverted-pyramid format. For example, a reporter could decide to write a nonlinear story about increasingly bad traffic conditions in a city. Around this core story idea, the writer might organize the story into themes, including causes of the poor traffic conditions, effects of the conditions on residents of the city, and proposed solutions to the problems. Under each of these headings could be several miniature inverted-pyramid stories on topics such as the influx of new residents in the city or lack of funds to repair the roads (under the causes heading), an interview with angry commuters or a local trucking company (under effects), or a map of proposed construction areas (under solutions).
