Traditionally, the capacity of the short-term store has been assessed by tests of memory span that measure the number of unrelated items that can be recalled in exact order. Explain the age differences in children with regard to memory span.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: A child’s memory span is considered to be a reflection of the size of the short-term store. When children represented with randomly ordered items, the number of items they can recall in exact order increases with age. The average memory span of 4- and 6.5-month-olds is about one item, of 2-year-olds about 2 items, of 5-year-olds about 4 items, of 7-year-olds about 5 items, and of 9-year-olds about 6 items.
