Explain Maria’s change in parenting style (e.g., her encouraging her children’s cooperation by making requests into games after her requests were refused) using Bandura’s concept of reciprocal determinism. How does Bandura’s concept of reciprocal determinism compare with Kelly’s theoretical concepts?

What will be an ideal response?

Bandura suggested that the person (P), behavior (B), and the environment (E) all influence each other and therefore affect behavior. This can be applied to Maria’s change in parenting style. Maria thought that requests would be fulfilled by her children (P > E). They were not. She, therefore, reassessed her thinking (E >P), which, in turn, influenced her behavior (P > B) by making the requests into games. Maria influences her children by getting them to do things she wants (P > E). The children influenced Maria’s requests by their initial refusal (E > B).
Both theories can be thought of as cognitive in nature. However, Bandura’s theory suggests that cognition is not an autonomous entity. It is both determined by, and affects, behavior and the environment.
