Why are reputations perceived and highly subjective in nature?

What will be an ideal response?

A reputation is not how we would like to be known by others, or how we think we are known-it is what they actually think of us, and their judgment, that count. Once a reputation is formed, it acts as a lens by which people form their expectations for future behavior.
