Answer: Reading children's literature not only provides enjoyment, but also can lead to an increase in language acquisition, reading comprehension, reading vocabulary, understanding story patterns, reading fluency, and writing. Additionally, reading a balanced selection of good literature provides students with points of reference for understanding their personal experiences as well as providing a broader prospective on the world. Reading also stirs the imagination, piques curiosity, and stimulates problem solving. Good literature helps students develop insight into human behavior such as morality, relationships, empathy and compassion, and the commonalities of these emotions and experiences among people of the world. It is also a means of handing down literacy and cultural heritage to succeeding generations and validates for students their own culture while opening doors to other cultures. Being familiar with good literature is included in language arts standards. Students need to be familiar with a variety of genres, have experiences discussing and interpreting literature, and develop their own tastes and preferences. Finally, NAEP and state assessments measure literary purposes and understanding of literacy conventions.
