Describe the current “environmental regime,” paying special attention to the Paris Accord. What is currently being done to address climate change? According to the provisions of the Paris Accord, what should be done to improve climate change outcomes? What role does poverty reduction play in addressing climate change?
What will be an ideal response?
The Paris Accord is the latest international environmental conference and the newest set of accords or agreements on climate change. The Paris Accord is meant to be the “global response” to climate change and the real, imminent threats it poses. The Accord aims for leadership and investment from the world’s largest emitters of green-house gases. Goals include: 1) Hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. 2) Increase the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience and lower greenhouse gas emissions development in a manner that does not threaten food production. 3) Make finance flows consistent with a pathway toward low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development. Students should address how the accord sees poverty as a contributor to as well as impact of climate change. Students should address how the Accord calls for developed nations to assist in meeting climate goals.
