Explain one of the feminist criticisms of the treatment of women in the health-care system.
What will be an ideal response?
(1) The physician–patient relationship reflects the subordinate status of women in society, with the physician (usually male) having power and control over the female patient. (2) Historically, the medical profession actively discriminated against women as practitioners. Although women now earn about half of medical degrees, they still often receive their medical training in an atmosphere that is hostile to women. (3) Medical care offered to women is often inadequate, irresponsible, or uncaring. For example, as many as 70% of hysterectomies are unnecessary. (4) Medical research conducted on women is often irresponsible or simply missing. For example, far more contraceptives have been developed for women than for men.
