Explain late effects coding
What will be an ideal response?
There are many conditions for which patients are seen where the reason for the visit is related to a prior condition. An example is a patient who was treated for a broken arm. When the cast is removed, the patient then has a rash that was caused by the wearing of the cast. Treatment of the rash is related to the broken arm, although it was a late effect of the original injury. These late effect codes are listed in the ICD-9-CM manual and should be used when the patient is seen for a condition related to a prior condition.
