R.M. is undergoing a palliative surgical intervention. How will you explain this to R.M. and

her family?

What will be an ideal response?

The goal of palliative surgery is to control or eliminate distressful symptoms. In this case, this
includes the obstructive process by the tumor in the abdominal cavity. After the surgery, R.M. should
have less nausea, less abdominal distension, fewer complaints of early satiety, and should be able to
tolerate food better.
