Discuss the research regarding the way experts process information in their own area of expertise as opposed to areas outside of their expertise. Provide an example.

What will be an ideal response?

Student examples will vary. A sample answer follows. Many researchers have studied the informational processing systems of experts. Experts being questioned about their area of expertise have richer conceptual representations in their feature list. For instance, a dog expert can identify more breeds and categories of dogs than a non-expert can. However, this richer representation does not spread to other feature lists. In other words, a dog expert might have approximately the same type of conceptual representations for "cat" as a typical person.
Different types of experts within a subject area also categorize concepts differently. For instance, a dog expert who is a dog breeder may organize information to fit the goal-derived purpose of "how to breed dogs that win prizes." In contrast, a dog expert who is a dog trainer may organize information to fit the goal-derived purpose of "how to train dogs and humans to be happy together."
