What are the five categories of sentencing? Explain which sentencing goals and objectives they accomplish and provide examples of how they do so
What will be an ideal response?
The five categories of sentencing are: (1) death penalty, (2), imprisonment, (3)
probation, (4) intermediate sanctions, and (5) fines, forfeiture, and restitution. Death
penalty accomplishes the goals of deterrence, incapacitation, and retribution by
preventing the offender from committing crime again. Imprisonment accomplishes
the goals of deterrence, incapacitation, and retribution by preventing the offender
from committing crime while in prison. Probation accomplishes the goals of
rehabilitation and possibly retribution, by requiring offenders to complete programs
that will help change the offender, and possibly by requiring monetary restitution to
the victim of the crime. Intermediate sanctions tend to accomplish the goal of
rehabilitation by requiring the offender to complete hours of community service,
complete substance abuse treatment, house arrest, and boot camps. Fines,
forfeiture, and restitution often accomplish the goal of deterrence by making it
financially painful to engage in criminal activity, hoping to discourage the offender
from committing crime in the future.
