The presence of DNA is not one of the major characteristics of life. Why, then, might scientists look for the presence of DNA to help confirm the existence of life?

What will be an ideal response?

In all of the life-forms on Earth, genes that are made up of DNA control heredity (which is one of the major characteristics of life). Although heredity in life-forms from another planet might be controlled differently, this is the only mechanism with which we are currently familiar.
