What does the speaker mean by “’Tis not too late to seek a newer world”(line 57)?

What will be an ideal response?

  • Taken literally, the line suggests questing, discovery, and seeking always to enlarge the limits of the possible and thus add to human progress—that all of this is a never-ending, lifelong ambition for those who are possessed by the spirit of adventure. In the larger context, with the references in line 60 to sailing ever westward, “beyond the sunset,” and in lines 63–64 to the Happy Isles and “the great Achilles” (who had perished in the Trojan War), it becomes clear that Ulysses is describing a voyage from which he and his companions will not return. The ultimate “newer world” to which he alludes is the one that lies on the other side of the boundary between life and death.
