Possible techniques include the following:
• Brainstorming: Activates prior knowledge and helps students organize new concepts. Teacher can evaluate background knowledge and provide clarification.
• Graphic organizers: Show relationships and make connections among words
• Images: Translating words into images involves cognitive processing and careful consideration of the word's meaning.
• Possible Sentences & Predict-O-Grams: Considers how words might function in a text and how they might be related.
• Simulation: Builds concrete, hands-on, conceptual understanding.
• Word Sorts: Fosters seeing likenesses and differences and categorizing words.
• Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy: Encourages word consciousness, use of context, and dictionary. Good technique for acquiring vocabulary.
Wide Reading: Provides opportunities to use context and meet words in multiple contexts. Best approach for acquiring vocabulary. Children's periodicals can be especially effective for building vocabulary.
• Reading Aloud: Good way to introduce students to words that they might not encounter in their own reading. Discussing new words can be a natural part of the read-aloud.
