a, R; b, R; c,: C; d, C
Reliever medications (a and b) usually consist of short-acting beta-agonist inhaled medications
such as albuterol and levalbuterol. These should be used as directed for quick relief when patient has
asthma symptoms. Oral steroids, when used as a "burst" at a high dose for a short period of time, are
considered relievers.
Controller medications (c and d) are used long-term to maintain control of inflammation and
should never be used to treat acute symptoms. Inhaled steroids, leukotriene modifiers, and
long-acting beta agonists are controller medications. Long-term medications are often used in
combination.
