Discuss gender-responsive approaches and some of the issues that women and girls face while incarcerated. Do you believe that gender-responsive approaches are necessary? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. A sample answer follows. Because women make up less than 15% of the jail population, jails are necessarily designed and run to house men. However, women have unique health-related issues, including pregnancy and childbirth that jail staffs and supervisors need to address. Also, women are more likely to be the primary caregivers for young children. For these reasons, I believe that gender-responsive approaches are necessary in jails.
