Define the REAL ID Act and what the goal of this type of legislation. Explain and pros and cons of this type of measure. Would you be in favor of this reform? Be sure to explain your answer
What will be an ideal response?
The REAL ID Act will create a national database because it requires states to share driver's license information. Critics of the REAL ID Act argue that it will create a de facto national identification card and database and since states will be responsible for the cost, it will cost citizens more money for a license. Proponents of the legislation believe that the REAL ID Act will eliminate the ability of illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses. It is estimated that the REAL ID Act would prevent tens of thousands of undocumented people from obtaining a driver's license. Critics of the act argue that it would create a public safety danger because undocumented immigrants would continue to drive without the benefit of being tested to determine whether they have the knowledge and ability to operate a motor vehicle. Student opinion answers will vary but should be supported by the arguments made in the text.
