Describe the components of a therapeutic community.

What will be an ideal response?

• A separate residential unit isolated from the general prison population (except, at times, for meals and other standard activities) to provide a sense of safety and belonging as the TC participants begin the process of change.
• A demanding program, including active participation in several hours of structured intervention per day, that requires emotional, physical, and intellectual work on their part.
• Increased responsibilities and incentives to encourage the residents to progress through the phases of the program, as an indication of "right-living."
• Close collaboration between treatment and corrections staff, and involvement of residents in the management, operation, and treatment for the TC community.
"Community as method" is the therapeutic strategy, whereby residents must actively participate in the community activities and take on responsibility for their peers' (as well as their own) recovery.
Generally, a period of 6-12 months of treatment, typically available toward the end of the inmate's prison sentence.
