A mother visits a physician because she is concerned her 4-month-old infant has lactose intolerance. What should the physician recommend for dietary changes to relieve the infant's lactose intolerance, and how will this impact the child's lactose tolerance in the future?

The infant should be given a lactose-reduced formula. Lactose-reduced formulas contain less lactose, and additional carbohydrate is provided by other sources such as modified cornstarch or sucrose. An infant who is fed a reduced-lactose formula will likely be able to eat dairy products later. Because dairy products are an important source of calcium, the mother should gradually introduce foods with low lactose into the infant's diet as he gets older.
