List the ways in which a reporter can find feature story ideas and apply them to a recent experience you had. What are some stories that you might pursue based on the principles described in this chapter?

What will be an ideal response?

Student responses will vary but should include the following main points: Techniques for finding feature story ideas include stop tuning out, look for simple things, follow up properly, and wonder more. A student who rides public transportation to school could “stop tuning out” by avoiding distractions like headphones or mobile phone use and listening to what passengers around him or her are saying. A simple conversation between bus riders in which one person complains about the distance they must walk to reach the bus stop could trigger a story idea. The student might follow up on the idea by checking the public transportation map for his or her city to see which neighborhoods are underserved and investigating how the decisions were made as to which neighborhoods have the most bus stops and who is most affected by those decisions.
