Potential and kinetic are both forms of energy. Potential energy is stored energy that results
from position or state. One example is shown in Fig. 7-1, when an archer draws back a
bowstring notched with an arrow. Or when energy is stored in food molecules. Kinetic
energy is the energy of motion, as when the archer releases the bowstring thereby causing the
arrow to fly toward the target, or when cellular respiration converts the energy in food
molecules into the energy of muscle contraction.
