Standards for earning a teaching license

The text identifies and discusses six standards by which a teacher education program earns accreditation. The first four have a rather direct impact on you as a student. In an essay, explain to a person outside the field of education why each of the four is important for prospective teachers in your major. Include possible negative results if the standards did not apply. Then identify the standard that you believe will be the greatest challenge to you, indicating why it might be a special challenge, and devise some strategies you can use to meet the standard in a highly satisfactorily way.

ANS: Scoring guide:

Key elements that should appear in an appropriate response:

* For full credit, the essay addressing the first part of the assignment requires the topics to be addressed for teachers in the student's major. Emphasis must be placed on significant related aspects (e.g., assessment as one component of an instructional package rather than just assessment).
* The student must also clearly identify the negative results of a teacher's failure to demonstrate the related competencies. Additional points might be added if the essay notes, for example, children with diverse backgrounds and needs (discussed in chapter 3).
* For full credit, the student must engage in reflection and problem solving by identifying one of the four standards, providing the reason for choosing it as an aspect for professional and/or personal development, and developing practical and feasible strategies for addressing the standard.
