Jeff and Steve have just noticed each other at a party. Describe how they will use proximity, eye contact, and touching to communicate the possibility of a relationship.
What will be an ideal response?
Proximity: When they approach each other, they will use proximity to signal how each of them defines their relationship at that moment. If interest increases, they will draw closer. Proximity will be influenced by their respective ethnicities. An accurate reading of these cues will facilitate or impede the progress of their relationship.
Eye contact: Making eye contact with each other, if only for a split second longer than usual, is a signal of interest. Partners with the greatest degree of agreement have the most eye contact with each other.
Touching: Touch often signals intimacy, immediacy, and emotional closeness. In fact, touch may very well be the closest form of nonverbal communication. How and where someone is touched suggest many aspects of a relationship. Levels of touching differ among cultures and ethnic groups.
