Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a member of the herpes family of viruses that causes swelling of the salivary glands and mononucleosis-like symptoms in adults. It is the most frequent infection found in newborns today. Growth retardation, jaundice, skin disorders, and small head size are common consequences.
