People today are generally marrying later in life than in previous generations. One of the reasons for this has to do with key changes in gender roles that have allowed many women to postpone marriage to go to college and pursue careers. Another is waiting to have children due to life goals and career aspirations. The increase in cohabitation among couples may also be a factor in delaying marriage, as we have seen. Avoiding divorce is yet another factor.
