Describe the purpose of arc chutes.
What will be an ideal response?
Arc chute plates are placed in close proximity to where the contacts open, and they use both mass and space properties to help extinguish the electrical arc before it becomes too large. The arc chute plates are made of iron so they have the mass to absorb the majority of the generated heat of the electric arc, so that the contacts do not have to dissipate all of the heat themselves. If the contacts had to dissipate the total heat generated by very large electrical arcs, the contact faces would become pitted, burned, and uneven, which would contribute to contact resistance and cause the heating problem to become worse.
