One type of bacteria, called gram-negative bacteria, has a pyrogen molecule that is part of its membrane structure. This endogenous pyrogen is released when the cell is destroyed by the immune system
Why would a severe gram-negative bacterial infection be particularly dangerous to a patient?
Large numbers of gram-negative bacteria would stimulate an immune response, leading to the destruction of the microorganisms. The problem is that by destroying large numbers of these bacteria, large amounts of the endogenous pyrogen are released all at once. This can cause a dangerous spike in body temperature. A very high fever (over 105°F, or 40.6°C) is dangerous. It can inactivate enzymes needed for biochemical reactions within body cells.
