Explain the structure of the cochlea
What will be an ideal response?
The cochlea is a bony, snail shell-like structure about 1.5 inches long. The scala tympani and the scala vestibule are the outer spaces of the cochlea that are filled with a substance called perilymph. The scala media is the space between the scala vestibule and scala tympani and it is filled with a jellylike substance called endolymph. The organ of Corti sits in the scala media on top of the basilar membrane. The organ of Corti contains thousands of hair cells and as the basilar membrane moves, the hair cells bend. This movement results in nerve activity that sends a signal to the acoustic nerve.
