Ashley lost the labels to her microscope slides and can no longer tell the difference between the two. Explain how she should distinguish a slide of the epithelium lining the esophagus from a slide of the epithelium lining the small intestine

What will be an ideal response?

The small intestine is lined with simple columnar epithelium. Columnar cells are tall and appear rectangular with their nuclei usually in the basal portion of the cell. The apical plasma membranes are often folded into microvilli in the small intestine to increase the surface area for absorption. By contrast, the esophagus is lined with nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Multiple layers of flattened cells help distinguish the slide of the esophageal lining from the slide of the small intestine lining.
