What happens to the swallowing process as humans age?

What will be an ideal response?

Besides swallowing disorders related to organic conditions, swallowing disorders can also occur within the healthy aging population. After the age of 60 and through the next decades of life, swallowing response times slow, tastes change, muscles of the tongue and pharynx become weaker, and swallowing endurance declines. The SLP must take into account these normal age-related changes when evaluating swallowing and recognize how these normal changes may predispose an elderly patient to dysphagia when medical conditions occur.
