Social inequality is often said to be the underlying social cause of environmental decline. Discuss social inequality’s role in at least three of the following processes: the distribution of pollution, over-consumption, the treadmill of production, uneven development, and conceptions of nature.
What will be an ideal response?
Social inequality perpetuates pollution in the quest for profit for the
capitalist, and lesser wages for the worker; over-population by the poor needing
more children to serve economic purposes; the treadmill of production—as
workers have less time at home because they are working more strenuous hours,
they must purchase more gadgets and pre-made food to perform tasks such as
cooking; and our concepts of nature, while 'nature' is often attached to the rich
who have ample time for leisure while the poor see nature as an other, rather
than embedded in it.
