The cost of goods available for sale is the sum of the following two factors:
(1 ) The amount of merchandise on hand at the beginning of the period.
(2 ) The net purchases during the period. Net purchases consist of total purchases plus freight-in less any deductions such as purchases returns and allowances and discounts from suppliers for early payment.
