Because of the manufacturing process, ferrous metals contain a certain amount of carbon. Cast iron has much larger amount of carbon (2.5% to 4%) as compared with steel (0.1% to 1.7%). How does carbon affect the property of cast iron and steel?
What will be an ideal response?
Because of the high amount of carbon, cast iron is a brittle material, unweldable and resistant to corrosion. Because of the low amount of carbon, steel is a ductile material, weldable, and prone to corrosion unless specially protected.
