Briefly describe AFIS
What will be an ideal response?
During the 1990s, states established the Automated Fingerprinting Identification System (AFIS) to process fingerprints submitted by police agencies. Although AFIS was a great improvement over the old human process of matching prints with a suspect, it still needed improvements. AFIS was a fragmented system, which lacked coordination and centralization. In 1999, the Federal Bureau of Investigation established the Integrated Automated Fingerprint System (IAFIS), which shortened the time to link fingerprint databases from several days to hours.
