Charlotte Perkins Gilman viewed heterosexual marriage between males and females as a sexuoeconomic relation. Women were expected to be financially dependent on men and, in turn, serve as caregivers for their husband and children. Their gender socialization included significant pressure to find a husband, who, in turn, felt obligated to support them. The sexual relationship between men and women also became an economic one, leaving both parties unhappy. Functionalist sociologist Talcott Parsons argued that women were socialized in the family to acquire expressive qualities, such as sympathy and emotionality, needed in the private sphere of the home. Men were socialized into instrumental qualities, such as rationality and competitiveness, needed for the capitalist workplace.
