Explain the theoretical roots of constructivism and the relationship of this theory to early childhood education
What will be an ideal response?
The theoretical roots of constructivism were established by Itard, who developed strategies for educating and treating persons who were deaf. Known as the patriarch of special education, Itard created the first systematic approach for specialized education based on individual needs of children. A student of Itard's, Sequin, extended his work and opened the first school dedicated to the education of persons with intellectual disabilities. This early constructivist work was complemented by that of Piaget, who believed that children develop based on interactions between their own internal drives and the surrounding environment. His theories of cognitive development shaped the High/Scope Curriculum and the Kamii-DeVries Approach. Vygotsky believed that children's development and learning is a socially mediated process, and the children learn societal expectations and gather knowledge for interaction with adults and more experienced peers. He emphasized relationships as the center of children's development and learning. Dewey, as well, emphasized relationships, and believed that the most effective education occurs in an interactive social context. Montessori saw education as a catalyst in individual and social development, and devoted her life to developing an effective method for the education of all children.
