List the three key things to consider when selecting your own PPE before caring for a patient.
What will be an ideal response?
The type of anticipated exposure, such as whether you expect only touch, or if splashes, sprays, or large volumes of blood or body fluid, secretions, or excretions may be present.
The durability and appropriateness of the PPE for the task. For example, some facilities may make aprons available to cover your clothing, instead of using a gown. You must consider whether your arms will be exposed to an infectious substance. Also, you must consider the fabric of the item. Is it fluid resistant, fluid proof, or neither? Select the item based on the type of exposure you expect and degree of protection provided by the item.
How well the PPE fits you. PPE that is too small or large will not provide optimal protection. Select items that fit you. The employer must ensure that PPE are available in sizes that will fit the workers to be protected.
