Explain Noel's hypothesis and how it relates to the contact situation.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers may vary but must include the following: Noel's hypothesis states that if three conditions--ethnocentrism, competition, and a differential in power--are present in the contact situation, ethnic or racial stratification will result. The contact situation refers to the conditions under which the minority group and dominant group first come into contact with each other. If following initial contact the dominant group sees the minority group as a threat to their culture, resources, and/or power--the dominant group will oppress the minority group as a means of maintaining distinct stratification. In return, the minority group must organize, acquire resources, and confront privilege to improve their situations.
