Define and give examples of objective and subjective criteria and explain why criteria must be reliable and valid.

What will be an ideal response?

• An objective criterion is one that is observable and measurable, such as the number of accidents on the job, the number of days absent, or the number of disciplinary problems in a month.

• A subjective criterion is based on a person’s judgment. Supervisor and peer ratings are examples of subjective criteria.

• Criteria must be reliable and valid especially when they are being used as part of a decision making process. When unreliable or inappropriate criteria are used for validation, the true validity coefficient might be under- or overestimated. Therefore, the inferences that are drawn from test scores that are validated using unreliable or invalid criteria may not be accurate or appropriate.
