D.W. asks about what plasmapheresis does and why it might help her feel better. Describe
how you would respond.
What will be an ideal response?
Plasmapheresis involves filtering autoantibodies and immune complexes from the blood. Therefore
fewer complexes will be available to damage tissues or organs, possibly reducing the signs and
symptoms associated with SLE. In plasmapheresis, a temporary catheter similar to a renal dialysis
access catheter is used for venous access. Blood is removed and sent through a pheresis field, and
the cellular components are returned to the patient with either saline or albumin. The procedure
usually takes several hours and can be performed once daily.
